31 and in Charge

Written by:

At the age of 31, Brian Deese has earned the trust of (or at least the from) President Obama in “dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American Capitalism.”

At the rate of the current UMC system, I will be thankful and awfully lucky to be ordained by the age of 31. (What was the statistic? That about 5% of ordained elders in the entire UMC are under the age of 35?)

Honestly, I can’t help but feel a bit annoyed and a bit bitter.

I like to note that Joshua Soule started preaching at 16, was a presiding elder (read district superintendent) at 23, basically wrote the Methodist Episcopal Constitution and led the MEC through the process of adopting it at 27, was elected bishop at declined it at 39 changing the course of the General Conference with regard to episcopal authority, and then accepted it at 43.
