Should it bother us that many of our churches do not reflect the community it surrounds?
Does it bother anyone else that there are cats out there that eat better than a lot of people in our country and the world? Have you seen some of these cat food commercials, with like slices of salmon served elegantly on a platter?
Or that someone would spend $320,000 for a dog house?
Or that people will sign petitions and try to get news time to raise millions of dollars to save the elephant exhibit in the zoo, but rarely does anyone get news time to raise money for the homeless?
Why do we act as if Christmas is our own birthday? (unless you were born on 12/25… )
Do we understand the concept of being giving? Would you agree that “Giving isn’t giving until it interrupts your life”?
And why do birds suddenly appear when you are near?
I don’t know the answers to most of your questions, but I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that the answer to the last one is “Just like me, they long to be close to you.”
lol
This reminds me of that Bruggemann book that I love, the Prophetic Imagination, when he talks about the state of NUMBNESS that most of us live in.
Sometimes it breaks in on me when I hear news that makes me cry, like about orphanages being bombed. I had to pull my car over when I heard a news story about that a few months ago, because for some reason, I got really emotional. And I thought, shouldn’t I be this emotional to hear this news? Shouldn’t this rack my heart with grief? And why don’t I feel this grief more often instead of listening like such news is normal?
