We’re starting our Lenten Series, based on the book The Hole in the Gospel.
Our church is doing a church-wide small group study on the book.
Our six sermons will be based on the studies:
Where is the Hole?
Finding the Hole in Me
What’s Wrong with this Picture?
Putting the American Dream to Death
Uncovering the Hole in the Church
Repairing the Hole in the World
During our planning meeting the senior pastor looked at me and said, “You got week 4.”
I couldn’t help but smile and said, “Are you sure?”
He looked at me and said, “Yea. Why?”
“Well, it’s the ‘Putting the American Dream to Death’ one. It just sounds… too much fun.”
“Knock yourself out.”
Fun.
I think I really am going to have fun with this. There’s a part of me that loves to stir up trouble. I know that some people may get offended by the way I feel about the American dream and American values.
Offending someone isn’t the biggest of my worries. I actually like being offensive. I actually like getting into trouble.
The biggest concern I have is what my wife said to me over dinner today.
“You can’t preach hard and challenging sermons if you don’t live them out.”
Very true.
So here’s to my attempt to really lead by example, to not only preach God’s words, but to really live out the Gospel.
Ha. Easier said than done.
