Instead of going to bed, I’ve been looking at old pictures and videos of N. Apparently, going to coffee shops with Dad and splurging on cookies isn’t a recent thing. I’m pretty sure this is the French Press in Santa Barbara. And he’s almost 5. And I’m certain that I overindulged him on cookies and other junk food because during those years because it seemed like he never knew what it meant to have enough food. He was always anxious around food and would overstuff himself during those first few months with us. I figured, if there’s one thing he can depend on us during our time together was that there’d always be food for him. And plenty of it. But turns out, we were going to be a forever family. Cookies and coffee are still a big part of our routines. (Coffee for me, duh). I can’t believe how fast time has gone by and how much he’s grown. He was always funny — even before he knew how to express himself with words. Today someone asked him, “What’s your name?” And he responded with “Handsome Nathanael.” Like… what the heck. Where did he get that? Anyway, I’m so proud and thrilled to see him grow. At the same time, it does hurt a little to see him grow. I guess that’s the paradox of parenthood. But I better put these thoughts aside and go to bed. The craving for coffee is slowly making its presence known. … what a messy eater….
